Hi I’m Lauren aka @momtatt. I am a self-taught machine tattooist with a degree in music. I started my tattoo practice in my years of studying, and I’ve now been tattooing for 4 years. For me, art and music are intertwined, both are the creative outcome of my primary influence: the natural world.
My work is strongly inspired by my early memories of my Oma working in her incredible cottage garden. Being just as tall as the flowers and running around with the butterflies. From my little eyes, that place was the closest thing to real magic.
I have now inherited a shelf-full of my oma’s old botany, gardening and herbalism books. Going through these texts and turning the pictures and diagrams into tattoos - it feels like I’m deciphering old family secrets. It’s given me the chance to continue learning from her even as she’s no longer around. And so, tattooing has become my way of communing with my matriarchy; through my grandmother to Mother Earth herself. Hence, the Momtatt name. A big part of my passion for tattooing comes from keeping her spirit alive.
